The Basic First Aid Course, certified by Barrow Training, aims to equip participants with essential skills and knowledge for handling emergency situations effectively. The course covers the principles of first aid, emphasizing its importance, legal considerations, and assessment techniques. Participants will learn how to perform basic life support (BLS), including CPR and the use of an AED, as well as how to manage common medical emergencies such as bleeding, burns, and asthma attacks. Additionally, the course addresses environmental injuries, identifies medical conditions requiring immediate attention, and familiarizes participants with first aid kits. Through hands-on practice and practical scenarios, attendees will build confidence and competence in applying first aid techniques. The course includes questionnaires and a review of key concepts to ensure understanding and skill proficiency.

Introduction to First Aid
- Understand the role and importance of first aid in emergencies.
- Recognize legal and ethical considerations in providing first aid.
- Identify course objectives and expectations.

Assessing the Situation
- Assess scene safety before providing aid.
- Perform a primary survey using the DRABC method.
- Know when and how to contact emergency services.
- Conduct a secondary survey to assess the casualty’s condition.

Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Perform adult CPR (chest compressions and rescue breaths).
- Demonstrate the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
- Place an unconscious but breathing person in the recovery position.
- Respond to choking emergencies in adults and children.

Managing Common Medical Emergencies
- Control bleeding and dress wounds.
- Identify and treat different types of burns.
- Recognize and respond to shock.
- Stabilize suspected fractures or sprains.
- Assist with asthma attacks.
- Provide first aid during a seizure.

Environmental Injuries
- Recognize and treat heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- Provide first aid for hypothermia and frostbite.
- Respond to bites and stings (insect, animal, snake).

Medical Conditions
- Recognize signs and symptoms of a heart attack and respond appropriately.
- Identify a stroke using the FAST method and take action.
- Assist with diabetic emergencies (hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia).

First Aid Kits
- Identify essential items in a standard first aid kit.
- Demonstrate correct use of various first aid supplies.
- Customize a first aid kit for different environments (workplace, home, outdoor).

Practical Scenarios and Hands-On Practice
- Apply first aid techniques in simulated emergency scenarios.
- Work effectively in teams during emergency situations.
- Build confidence in performing first aid under pressure.

Course Review and Assessment
- Review critical course concepts.
- Successfully complete written or practical assessments.
- Clarify remaining questions or uncertainties.
Each learner will receive a Barrow Training Certificate of attendance which is valid for 2 years.
