The aim of this course is to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and competence in the theory, principles, and practice underpinning the nursing process and nursing profession, enabling them to perform a range of basic nursing skills. The course objectives include understanding the history and development of nursing, acquiring knowledge of the structure and function of the healthcare service in the Republic of Ireland, and familiarising with various disciplines and specialties within nursing. Learners will also grasp the nursing process, appreciate models of care, and become aware of nursing ethics and etiquette in care situations. Effective communication consistent with the carer’s role, awareness of occupational hazards, and familiarity with common nursing/medical terminology are also key components. Additionally, the course covers the performance of basic skills such as measuring and accurately recording temperature, respiration, blood pressure, and fluid balance.

  • Entry Requirements

To access programmes leading to this award the learner should have reached the standards of knowledge, skill and competence associated with the preceding level of the National Framework of Qualifications. This may have been achieved through a formal qualification or through relevant life and work experience.

Ideally a minimum of Level 4 certificate standard of education and a strong interest in the provision of quality care in a healthcare setting.

Proficiency in written and spoken English, along with computer literacy skills, is crucial. Students enrolling in Level 5 courses are expected to exhibit proficiency in reading, drafting, preparing, and comprehending information on various topics. Basic IT skills and access to necessary equipment such as a computer, broadband, email, Microsoft Office, and recording equipment are necessary for skills demonstration tasks. Additionally, learners must be capable of self-directed study as this course is delivered through blended learning.

  • Progression

Successful completion of Nursing Theory & Practice enables the learner to transfer to programmes leading to other certificates where this component is a mandatory or an elective requirement.

Nursing Theory & Practice is an elective module towards the Healthcare Support Level 5 – 5M4339 Major Award.

Upon successful completion of the module, learners will be awarded a QQI minor component Award in Nursing Theory & Practice.
