This module aims to provide the learner with the skills, knowledge and competence to meet the full range of needs of older people in a variety of care settings.

Who should complete?

Care of the Older Person (5N2706) is ideal for individuals pursuing or already working in the healthcare sector, particularly in roles that involve providing care and support to elderly individuals. This includes healthcare assistants, social care workers, personal care assistants, and support workers. The module covers essential aspects of caring for older adults, including personal care, medical needs, and promoting independence and quality of life. Completion of this module is advantageous for individuals in roles where understanding care for the elderly is vital.

Entry Requirements

To access programmes leading to this award the learner should have reached the standards of knowledge, skill and competence associated with the preceding level of the National Framework of Qualifications. This may have been achieved through a formal qualification or through relevant life and work experience.

Ideally a minimum of Level 4 certificate standard of education and a strong interest in the provision of quality care in a healthcare setting.

Proficiency in written and spoken English, as well as computer literacy skills, are essential. Students undertaking Level 6 module s are expected to demonstrate proficiency in reading, drafting, preparing, and comprehending information across various topics. Basic IT skills and access to necessary equipment such as a computer, broadband, email, Microsoft Office, and recording equipment are required for skills demonstration tasks. Additionally, learners must be capable of self-directed study as this module is delivered through blended learning.

Progression

Successful completion of Care of the Older Person (5N2706) enables the learner to transfer to programmes leading to other certificates where this component is a mandatory or an elective requirement.

Care of the Older Person (5N2706) is an elective module towards the Healthcare Support Level 5 – 5M4339 Major Award.

Upon successful completion of the module, learners will be awarded a QQI minor component Award in Care of the Older Person (5N2706).
