Who Should Complete?  

The QQI Level 5 Special Needs Assisting course is designed to accommodate diverse adult learners. It welcomes individuals ranging from recent school leavers without prior experience in the Early Childhood Care and Education sector to mature adults with relevant life or work background. Learners often seek new career prospects, are engaged in home-related responsibilities, or are currently employed in the childcare sector. Many opt for the part-time blended learning pathway to attain the qualification. The course welcomes all learners, especially those aiming for a career as a Special Needs Assistant in Ireland.

Entry Requirements 

Applicants must meet the standards of knowledge, skill, and competence aligned with the preceding level of the National Framework of Qualifications, which can be achieved through formal qualifications or relevant life and work experience. Ideally, a minimum of Level 4 certificate standard of education is preferred, with a strong interest in providing quality care in a childcare setting. Proficiency in written and spoken English, along with computer literacy skills, is crucial. Students enrolling in Level 5 courses are expected to exhibit proficiency in reading, drafting, preparing, and comprehending information on various topics. Basic IT skills and access to necessary equipment such as a computer, broadband, email, Microsoft Office, and recording equipment are necessary for skills demonstration tasks. Additionally, learners must be capable of self-directed study as this course is delivered through blended learning.

Progression  

Upon successful completion of this course, individuals can pursue employment as an SNA in Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), at primary or secondary levels. Moreover, it provides avenues for Further Education or Third-Level Education. Learners can advance to the QQI Special Needs Assisting Level 6 module. Additionally, Barrow Training offers a progression pathway with Southeast Technological University (SETU) upon completion of select childcare courses.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a QQI Component Certificate in Special Needs Assisting (5N1786)

QQI (Quality & Qualifications Ireland) serves as the national accrediting body for further education and training in Ireland.
